i like the idea of using two twin beds in a guest room instead of one larger bed. This room was featured in cottage living magazine. It is in the home of Atlanta designer Tyler Colgan. I love everything in this picture! I think the cornices could easily be made with mdf board. I think I remember reading the pattern of holes in the cornices was made using different sized drill bits. this idea would be cute for a little girl's room too.

displaying {photographs} in the home...

there seems to be such a wide range of ideas/thoughts on displaying photos in the home. some feel that it is best to have them only in private areas of the home while others feel that it is your home to display how ever you see fit! now that I have a baby, I have several photos that I want to display. my friend holly did an excellent series of posts regarding this matter. i agree with her about the old/small house issue...that the whole house is public! i personally love going into other's homes and seeing photos on display. i once was in an old farmhouse where there were several very precious photos of the homeowners three children on the walls just about everywhere. loved it!! and decided then and there that that was what i wanted to do someday when i had children! to me, it was not showy or done in a bragging fashion...just sweet, well done photos. if i remember correctly, most were at least 11x14 and larger. that's another thing size...some feel 8x10 is huge, while other's think that shouldn't even be on a wall! again, to me, a matter of personal preference. i have been collecting inspiration pictures of display ideas. i love the clipboard and pant hanger idea for a hallway. so easy to switch out photos..that's a good thing for me since i am having the hardest time deciding what kind of frame, mat size etc. for the photos i want to display. and you better believe if i had a house with tall enough ceilings, i would so have a photo blown up huge like katie brown did of her daughter above the armoire..love it! i like small photos in huge mats, photos casually pinned to a cork board like in the dining room picture i have here, above the mantle or just pinned to the wall like in the office picture. i would love to hear your thoughts/ideas on all this! please share!!

i am loving the sweet yarn flowers i saw in the february issue of country living. i am going to make some for my baby's first birthday. i am so. not. crafty. i do hope they turn out cute in spite of that! here are a few images i have been collecting for inspiration. i plan to make mine in soft orange, yellow, pale blue and white. i like how the above pictures show them in the jars. i am not sure if i i'll wrap fabric around the jars like in the first picture or with ribbon like the first picture. what do y'all think. images via spearmint decor, creative jewish mom and ??.

But, I am stuck now because I think this gazelle from Anthropologie is so cute too! I don't live near Anthro, so I have not seen in person. Have any of you? I am loving this fun idea of using old, wooden milk crates or soda crates for storage in a nursery or child's room. Just add some casters on the bottom to make it easy to move around the room as needed and then roll under the bed to put it away. Perfect for toys, diapers or for whatever you need to store! By now, I am sure most of you have seen Lauren's (of Pure Style Home) outdoor table. I fell in love with the mix of rustic boards and industrial sawhorses. I have plans for my husband to make one for our backyard. Isn't her's gorgeous with the pumpkins? Love that. In the warmer months can't you just see tons of candles all down the middle of it for an evening dinner party? Thanks for such great inspiration, Lauren! While I am on the subject of tables, I love how easy and fun these tables from Country Living and Simply Seleta are for kids. Just cover in butcher/craft paper, draw on the place mats and add some crayons or markers! There is a blank space above the chest of drawers in my baby's nursery. I have had a hard time deciding what to put there and every time I decide to do one thing, something else catches my eye. But, I think a chalkboard is the thing I have finally decided on....for good! I hope anyway ;). I love the chalkboard wall in my last post about moomah. That little lamb drawn on it is just too precious. I plan to use the chalkboard for drawing something on..maybe an animal or writing the letter Gg and then drawing a girl like on the vintage alphabet card in the picture above..who knows. I like how Tracery Interiors have these little chalkboards hung with some sort of string or twine. Seleta recently posted these images of them in use! Also check out this page on their blog of a chalkboard wall. Isn't that a precious room? At first I wanted to frame the chalkboard and now think I will just have a thin board cut at Lowe's or home depot and hang with twine like they did. I can't believe I've been to NYC and didn't know about this place! I just happened to find out about it by reading Erika's (Urban Grace Interiors) great post about her recent NYC trip. I think I could move my baby's jenny lind crib right in and live there, ha! I love the huge chalkboard, the cow picture, the framed prints, the lights, the school chairs...all of it. I love the bathroom in the top picture. It was in the home of Haskell Harris, one of the former editors of the much loved Cottage Living magazine. Would somebody please bring that magazine back? I really love the look of a flokati in a nursery and I really want to use it in my baby girl's nursery, but the shedding....oh the shedding. Now that she is crawling, it gets on her. I have always adored the polka dotted lampshade in my friend, Holly's first nursery. I am planning to copy it for my own :). A few years back I got a tall, thrift store lamp for 4.00 that had a big shade on it. I am going to redo to give a similar look to the lamp in her nursery pictured here. I am in the process of painting the lamp base in an ultra flat brown spray paint. I think this brand/kind was used in Cottage Living a few years back to redo a chandelier and it gives a nice smooth looking finish without the little sparkles that spray paint can have. First, I'll use some lightweight cotton duck for a slipcover over the shade. Next, add some brown polka dots with a round, foam stamper and craft paint. Last I'll trim around the bottom with some knife pleat trim found at Hobby Lobby to complete the look!

I had a chance to go to ikea this past weekend to do a little shopping for the nursery. I picked up this flokati rug. I want something soft and neutral for the rug in the nursery. Now that I have it home, I am not sure. What are your thoughts on these rugs? I already have frieze carpet in the room, so I couldn't do just a thick shag. It would be like putting shag on top of shag. I would love to do that if I had wood floors. The pictures posted here are a mix of shag and flokati and are from oh dee oh, cottage living, holly mathis interiors (who I got to shop with on Saturday as well!!) and ikea.

Yes, I am writing about this nursery again. I got these knobs in the mail yesterday from Anthropologie to go on a dresser that is going to be used as the changing table. The dresser is very similar to the one pictured here. Mine is a family heirloom that belonged to my grandmother and members of her family before that. I have had it in my living room the past several years. It will be nice to use it in the nursery and think about how many generations before have used that same dresser. I am going to get this changing pad cover to go on the top.

Again I apologize for the lack of posts. I have s.l.o.w.l.y. been putting my thoughts together for baby GIRL's nursery. One thing I plan to get is this darling elephant hamper. A splurge for a laundry hamper, but so cute and a fun touch. I first saw it in the fabulous nursery that Laurie Rhoney of Rhoney Design put together for her daughter. I'm sure you all have seen this darling space already and I have been wanting to blog about it since I first fell in love with it. Be sure to check out Erika's post about it. But, back to the hamper. It is just one of the design elements I'm stealing, I mean "borrowing" from that nursery. I have since spotted it again at me and wee. Be sure to check out this precious space, too. The elephant hamper can be found here at home decorators. On a side note, I am planning to go with the topsy turvy toile below and scored it in Dallas this past weekend for only 6.00 a yard! If you are in need of fabric and live in the Dallas area, you need to go to Perth street and check out all the fabric outlets. They have great deals on all kinds of fabric and are right together in walking distance.

I've been doing some entertaining the last few months. Someone has moved in with me, literally. This someone, although not very big, has demanded my energy and I will even have to redo a room in my house just for this little person. I am not complaining. I've waited years for this person to arrive. I thought the post title was fitting. Not only is it the name of the fabric I'm considering for somewhere in little one's room, it's how life is going to be in a few months, but that is a good thing and I am so excited for it to happen!

If you are looking for an easy summertime drink, this is it! I had chai tea the other day at a friend's house for the first time and let's just say I am officially addicted. After going through Starbuck's drive through a couple of times in a week for it, I finally just got some at the store to make my own. It is so good and easy. Just pour the concentrate in a glass mug with equal parts of milk and add ice! Perfect for summer and you can be sure I'll try it hot when the weather turns cooler again! Once I've used up this container, I need to just purchase the tea bags so I can make a lower calorie version of it.

I had such a fun day last Saturday. After emailing back and forth the last several years, this precious friend and I finally met!! We had such a fun day together. It started with a tour of her darling cottage! We then headed out for late morning shopping at Round Top (Texas) antique show, ate barbecue (we are in Texas afterall!!) sandwiches at La Bahia and then headed to Burton to visit The Nesting Company. We enjoyed visiting with the sweet owner, Heidi. The store is in an old building, with lots of charming character and such a cute storefront. Heidi is a florist and is very creative. Just look at that "coral". It is actually twigs spray painted red!! I will have to remember that! Afterward we headed to Leftovers in Brenham where we were greeted by a sweet (but big!!) saint bernard. It is a beautiful store. It was a fun day that went by too quickly! Thanks again Holly for such a fun day!

I recently picked up this cute top from target. It looks better in person than the picture and very flattering on. It'll be cute paired up with these white jeans. A couple of months ago I found some long sleeve Merona cardigan sweaters on the clearance rack. I love the way they fit and feel. For warmer months, Target has come out with a 3/4 sleeve version and I plan to get it in white. Perfect for summer evenings and cute with tees, tanks and bermuda shorts. I saw these shoes in store and think they are cute. They come in green too. Love the green, but think I would wear the tan more. I still haven't decided on a light, but I appreciate your opinions!

Remember I posted about doing a little updating to our back porch light? Well we now have moved on to adding lights to our two car carport. It's just a basic carport, made of wood, open and held up by posts. Across the front three posts, my plan is to put one of each of these lantern lights pictured above on each post. On the side of the carport, at the top where the roof crowns I want to put one of the lights below, but can't decide which one. I love the industrial warehouse, vintage feel they have and the iron pipes they hang from. I need your opinion ladies! I need to order soon, so which one do you like?

I went into Bath and Bodyworks this afternoon and picked this up. The scent is pineapple mango, smells incredible and was on sale for only 5.00! I need to go back in and get some different scents. It is by Slatkin & Co. I've not used this brand of candle before and I'm hoping it burns evenly. I hate when candles just burn down through the middle and leave lots of wax on the sides.

I love the unexpected look something industrial gives a home. These clothes closets Courtney found at Installations Antiques in Houston are fabulous. They would be great for a child's room or a laundry room. Someone commented on her post and left a link to L. K. Goodwin, a company specializing in material handling equipment. I am loving these canvas bins and baskets. You can find tons of uses for them such as storing laundry or toys. I have a stainless restaurant kitchen work table I use as an island in my kitchen I got at a local restaurant supply store and after seeing this similar looking one, (mine has a shelf under it) I think I need to put some casters on mine. I also think these stainless shelves are a great addition to a pantry or even out in an open kitchen. Check out how fabulous Erika's pantry looks with them. I am loving her lockers, too! I just wish I had a pantry.

We recently replaced our backdoor light fixture. It was just a simple, glass nothing special fixture. I found this one at Lowe's and thought it would be a simple, little fix up for that area. Wouldn't it also make a fun fixture above the mirror in a boy's bathroom? Look how adorable these similar fixtures are above the baby bed in this nursery! Go ahead and check out the entire room that Lauren of Pure Style Home did for her son. It is worth a separate post entirely!

Ever since I saw style editor Heather Chadduck's porch curtains in Cottage Living (still mourning that loss) I have wanted to do this with my own porch. I also love the way the cloths are are rolled up on this Baton Rouge cottage. This is such an easy, inexpensive way to add a bit of style to this outdoor area. These can be done with simple canvas drop cloths found at Lowe's and they come in a variety of sizes. I plan to use galvanized/iron plumbing parts for the rods like Heather Bullard did with hers and maybe these cheap rings from Hobby Lobby sewn at the top. I think there is a spray available that can be put on the cloths to help prevent mold/mildew issues.

*edited to add another picture. This home was featured in Cottage Living, but I can't find it on their site. The owner did a fun upholstered door that I want to try for a couple of my doors that are not original to my home.

One of these days when I am finally blessed with a child, I am so going to do a large picture like the one I have pictured here and I think it would look so good on canvas. The big, precious picture above the armoire is of Katie Brown's daughter and this is in Katie Brown's home. It has been featured in Country Home and Cottage Living. Her home is just darling and I love her mix of unique elements. Erin of Elements of Style recently posted some pictures of a condo she decorated. It featured wonderful pictures on canvas. I had the opportunity to go into this fAbULoUs clothing store this past week. Just like with Anthropologie, I could easily move in and LIVE here. The interior looks like the inside of an old, southern house. It has wood floors, oriental rugs and vintage items displayed. It would be so fun to work there! There was one table that had a big, tall, glass vase filled with lots of little branches. Such a simple, easy to do thing. Inside the store, they were burning this Henri Bendel candle. It was just a perfect scent for this store. If you go here, you can click on each of the stores for a slide show of the interiors of each one. When I saw this blog on a new JCrew men's store, it reminded me of Billy Reid. If you ever have a chance to go into this store, do so!

No week is complete for me without a trip to Target! I recently got these shoes. I think they are going to look good with my black toes ;). They are low enough to be comfortable for wearing all day, yet will look like I'm wearing much taller heels with longer jeans and pants. The color is darker than this in person and I think they will look good with lots of colors. They had them in bronze on the website, but are no longer available. I would have liked those, too.

I first started thinking about this bag when I saw it here. I went to Target to check it out and got it. I brought it home and then decided to return it. I wasn't sure about it, but I kept thinking about it. The thing with Target is when things go on clearance you can get stuff at such low prices. So when I spotted the bag for a mere 5.75, I knew it had to come home with me permanently! Notice it was even featured in this great article! It is a big bag, but I love that it can hold lots.

I got a much needed pedicure today. This is the color I went with. I like it although it is a huge change from my usual colors. I normally wear a french baby pink, a light cafe latte color, or go bare, but I thought for fall I'd give this a try. Do you wear black polish?

Cottage Living does it again! Add this kitchen to my list. This one is featured in the November/December issue of Cottage Living. I haven't gotten mine yet, but I saw it on the website and can't wait to see the article. Anne Turner Carroll, an assistant decorating editor at CL, has done a wonderful job with her kitchen reno. I love the subway tile, shelves, lighting and the french doors. Notice her brown hemstitched napkins. Love those and want some! I like all her topiaries, too. If you are looking for some nice ones, I have two of the one I have pictured from Crate and Barrel. Love them!

{cozy} bedroom...

I am so ready for a change in my master bedroom. There are only two ways to arrange the furniture in that room and I think it's time to move it all the other way. It would give it a fresh feel and help my feelings too. Almost like I have something new! My bedroom is tiny. It is an old house and so doesn't have huge rooms like newer houses. I'm not complaining. I love my old house! I am thinking of going dark in that room. I think a dark paint color would give a fun contemporary touch to it. I love this room featured in Cottage Living. It is the bedroom of Lee Kleinhelter, owner of Pieces in Atlanta. I could never be brave enough to do the dark ceiling like she did, but I think it does give the room a nice, cozy, cocoon feeling and the glossy paint adds some glam. I think the yellow lamps are fun and I love the white bedding and tufted headboard. I know for my bed, I want to do a white diamond matelasse coverlet and this ruffled duvet. I want to get this fabric and do one big, lumbar pillow and then two big, simple, white shams to go with it. Maybe I should be on the search for yellow
lamps, too?

This bedroom belongs to Tia Zoldan. It was also featured in Cottage Living, but was painted a different color at the time. Love this rich color. Any guesses as to what it might be? Again, love the white bedding and the headboard.

I am loving the September JCrew catalogue. Yes, I know it is now October. I have gotten some great ideas from it. I am so not fashion savvy, but I'm trying. I like how jcrew puts things together, but for my budget, not so much. Here are some outfits I like. I love this argyle sweater paired with the pearls and dark jeans. This sweater is 158.00. It is cashmere, but I did find a great alternative here for less than 20.00. I got it in the vermont orange and pale ale colors. I've recently gotten some great jeans, now all I need is to find a long pearl necklace to finish the look!

I wish I were about 10 years younger so I could pull this look off. This is just so cute! This purse is 298.00, but this one at Old Navy for less than 15.00 might work. I like it in the gray color actually.

This whole look is just darling! I found a ribbed tank practically just like this in this color at JCP on clearance for less than 5.00 last week. I got it in brown and a great teal blue, too. It's perfect for layering under a jean jacket. For wonderful fashion tips, go here and here!

I *think* (I am always changing my mind :) I'd like these grommet curtains for my family room. I saw a great idea in the newest edition of The New Decorating Book by Better Homes and Gardens. The owner had used electrical conduit pipe to hang her curtains. It is silver pipe that is easily found at Lowe's or Home Depot, not to mention cheap, too! TJ Maxx...

TJMaxx let me down yesterday. I didn't see what I was looking for. However, they did not let me down a few months ago. I got the shorter, round vase pictured here, that I had been wanting for so long. I've seen it at Anthropologie and online for about 60.00 (ish). I paid only 12.99 for mine. I was thrilled the day I spotted this sitting on the shelf at TJ's because I knew how much they were going for elsewhere. I now want to find the tall, oval one in the picture. So, I'll be on the lookout! If you want one like mine, Sundance has them on sale for about 30.00. Still not bad considering how much they were originally. Vivaterra has them, too.

I love this!! It is just so sweet looking and I like that it is flat on the bottom. This would be so pretty on my chest of drawers holding my pearls and other necklaces. Where or where can I find it?? If you know, spill! In the meantime, I'll be stopping by tjmaxx tomorrow afternoon to see if they might have something similar. Even though they might have something similar, I want THIS one! It was in the January 2008 issue of Blueprint magazine. If anyone has that magazine, would you please look to see if it lists a source? Thanks!

I have some blank space on my living room wall and have decided that I want a gallery wall. I have been collecting inspiration pictures and collecting frames to do this. Let's take a look at my pictures and then help me make some decisions.

After looking at all these, does anything go as far as creating a gallery wall? Is it okay to mix landmark pictures with pictures of flowers? What about framed papers? I found this September/October issue idea via Brown Turtleneck Sweater. This is perfect for a casual fall dinner party. I just love soup with great bread. Click on the image to see details. Don't you love the invitation? It's simple and easy. You could hand deliver and use vintage flatware found so cheap and some twine. Darling!

I just got my first issue of a new subscription to Domino magazine today. I know I am going to enjoy it and will add it to my other addiction pile, I mean magazine pile ;). I get plenty of home magazines. Hey, it's cheap entertainment! However, I am wanting to start subscribing to a fashion magazine. I want something that will give me ideas to work with what I have or enough of an idea that I can re-create the look on a Target, Old Navy, etc. budget ;) My friend is planning to subscribe to Lucky. So, what are your favorite fashion magazines?

Black interior doors...

I have been thinking about painting my interior doors of my 1940's cottage black. I am just having trouble with the commitment part. I think it looks so good in pictures and makes such an impact. I've tried black outside doors before and I didn't care for it. But, they did have a screen or glass door in front and I think I didn't care for the combination of the two. I have several inspiration pictures to share.

These two pictures are of the home of fab blogger Courtney from Inside the Loop. You can see the sliver of black door in the brown room picture just to the left. Isn't that a great brown wall color?! AND look at that wonderful imperial trellis wallpaper!

I have suddenly started really being into the color yellow when I haven't been so much before. Just look how cute these target shoes are on this blogger! I love how this sweater looks with the dark wash jeans. I could see a white top layered under it. This top is cute, too. Of course Target would have to be out of this yellow purse Just look how cute Kate Spade's yellow sweater is! And aren't these darling for wearing with all this yellow? Why can't jcrew have target prices? ;) That would look so cute with these. Share some of your favorite yellow fashions with me!

Kitchens...

Here are some kitchens I have saved. I just love that chalkboard wall with the metal sliding pantry doors. This was in the Cottage Living idea house last year in New Orleans. LOVED that house! The white kitchen with the tricycle was in Country Living, I believe. It is my favorite one I think. I have managed to use some of the elements from most of these kitchens in my own. My cabinets are painted white and I have a stainless restaurant kitchen worktable for an island, although mine is not on wheels like the one pictured here. I have the schoolhouse ceiling fixture. I also have a porcelain sink, but mine is not the pretty apron front kind. I have painted wood floors done in black/white diagonal checks. They are 18 inch square and I wish I had done them larger, maybe 22 inch. The fab kitchen pictured with the huge chalkboard is in the home of Cottage Living style editor, Heather Chadduck. Although my stove is old like Heather's, it is not exactly the same one. I have a 1947 (??) O'Keeffe and Merritt gas stove and I love it. I had searched for one like my grandmother had, but found this one instead. It was an estate sale find. I'll have to blog about how I got it. Heather's kitchen has a blue/gray ceiling. Mine will too, if I ever finish it. I've splotched, just need to complete the job! The paint color is called hazy sky by Wal-Mart color place paint. FYI, I have used this brand in several different colors and have always been pleased with the quality. The kitchen with the blue chairs is in the new September issue of Cottage Living. I just love all those windows and I like how they are painted a darker color. My kitchen has the old fashioned crank out window above the sink...maybe I should paint it a darker color. In my dream kitchen I would have white subway tiles with grey grout. In the all white kitchen pictured, I just love the narrow window. I have one little built in corner shelving thing that I have struggled to figure out what I want to put there. My precious friend Holly (http://www.hollymathisinteriors.com/) suggested a collection of creamers. I like that idea and have one to get me started. Just need to hit the estate sales to find more! After reading what Mrs. Rauth ( check out her cute blog here http://therauths.blogspot.com/) had to say about my white after labor day thread, I decided that I just might be a wild one and indeed wear white after Labor Day. Actually, I found this cute pair of jeans on a clearance rack for less than 4.00. It was meant to be. I think I'll get the bag, too. I will however restrain myself and not wear the jeans and carry the purse at the same time ;).

I am a Southern girl and growing up as one, I was brought up with the knowledge that one doesn't wear white after Labor Day or before Easter. Ever since I saw Jennifer Aniston in Rumor Has It carrying a white purse, I've thought I would like to have one, but I've never really found one I liked until now. But is it truly too late in the season to get/carry one? I'm tempted to get and save for the spring, but by then there will probably be one out I like better. My friend says that winter white is okay. Tell me your thoughts!

I may or may not have spent an hour shopping in target tonight. Oh who am I kidding?!? I love target, don't you?? There was a girl at church this morning that had this dress on and carrying this purse. She looked so cute! So, I went to see if I could find a new purse and I spied the one she had and then later saw the dress! This dress is adorable on and will be very comfortable, too! It is longer on me than on this model and comes just above my knees. I love the purse, too! So, run, don't walk, to target and get all this too! I checked out the shoes while I was there and there is one pair of moccasins that I may just have to go back and get! Here are the links!

Ballard Designs pillow...

Has anyone ever gotten one of these pillows from Ballard Designs? I am curious about the quality. I am wanting a pillow for a red, floral chair in my den. It came with a pillow that is the same fabric as the chair, but I think it needs a solid pillow. I am thinking the brown one. But which monogram? Since it's for my den, I think one of the more simple ones. Maybe style 14 or 17? Oh how I wish I lived closer to IKEA. That store is just plain fun! I have a stainless restaurant work table in my kitchen that I use as an island. I want these bar stools to go with it. I think they will look good. I plan to get two. I'd like to have the number 1 and 2 embroidered on the back. Just not sure how that would hold up to washing. I got most of this collection in one day. Some came from thrift stores and maybe a dish or two came from an estate sale. Some of these have the maker's mark on the back, too! For now, I have them displayed on my dining room shelves.
